Hanes^® History

Over one hundred years ago, John Wesley Hanes revolutionized the clothes market with his two-piece underwear for men. His company became the US market leader for men’s, women’s and children’s wear in the following years. With a success story that continues till today, Hanes^® has defined the clothing industry like no other company ever has.

1901

Pleasant (P.H.) Hanes forms P.H. Hanes^® Knitting Co. to produce underwear for men. Hanes^® introduces new two-piece underwear, a radical departure from the traditional one-piece union suit that is popular at that time. The American T-shirt is born! The same year, brother J. Wesley Hanes forms Shamrock Mills Co. to produce men’s hosiery.

1965

The two Hanes^® companies merge to form Hanes^® Corporation.

1970ies

In the mid 70’s, executives at Hanes^® Knitting discover that their white underwear products are being screenprinted and worn as outerwear. Keith Alms of Hanes^®Knitwear believes there is a viable business in selling white underwear T-shirts to screenprinters.

1975

Hanes^® introduces a heavier-weight Tee-shirts, called the Hanes^® Beefy-T^®, specifically for the screenprint industry. Later that same year, Hanes^® develops the “screenprinter fold” eliminating the additional cost and handling of individual packaging.

1980

Hanes^® Printables becomes a separate division of Hanes^® Knitwear dedicated to distributing imprintable T-shirts and other apparel.

1982

Hanes^® starts its business in Europe with a European collection.

1984

Hanes^® “Just My Size” in the US. A brand dedicated to meeting the needs of full-figured women.

1989

Hanes^® signs Michael Jordan, an up-and-coming young professional basketball player out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

1990

Hanes^® starts printable business in Europe and very fast becomes a big and impressive brand in promotional textile market. Soon after Hanes^® also sells in Central Eastern Europe.

1996

Hanes^® sponsors clothing for about 70.000 voluntary helpers at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.

2001

Celebration of 100 Years of Hanes^®. The one-billionth Beefy-T^® is sold!

2004

Transformation from unisex collection to separate collections for men and women has revolutionary impact in the market.

2006

Hanesbrands Inc. (HbI) becomes a standalone, publicly held company!

2010

Hanes^® introduces organic T-shirts as well as the sports range Cool-DRI^®!

2012

Hanes^® introduces Cool-DRI^® Shorts and Sweatpants!

2013

Hanes^® introduces new highlights in its Cool-DRI^® sports range! Three modern styles that will become an all-time favorite in a heartbeat!

2014

Hanes^® expands its popular Cool-DRI^® range by 4 Performance styles for men and women!
